Are Squirrels Wrecking Your Attic? Signs, Dangers, and What to Do in Mount Pleasant

The squirrel problem in Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant is one of the fastest growing municipalities in South Carolina, but it's also one of the most heavily treed. The massive live oak canopy that defines neighborhoods from Old Village to Park West provides squirrels with direct highway access to virtually every roofline in town.

The eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is by far the most common species, present at high density throughout the suburb. Fox squirrels are occasionally encountered in the rural edges near Awendaw and Francis Marion. Both can and do enter attic spaces, but gray squirrels are by far the more consistent nuisance species.

Signs of squirrels in your attic

The most obvious sign is sound. Squirrels are diurnal. They're most active during daylight hours, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon. If you're hearing activity in your ceiling or attic during the day (as opposed to raccoons, which are typically nocturnal), squirrels are the most likely explanation. If the sounds happen at night, the picture changes: our post on telling rats and squirrels apart in the attic walks through the key distinctions.

Specific signs to look for:

  • Rapid, light movement sounds in the morning, particularly before 9am
  • Scurrying and rolling sounds (squirrels run quickly and change direction often)
  • Occasional chattering or vocalization, especially in early spring
  • Visible entry points at the roofline: look for gaps at fascia boards, damaged vents, or chewed wood edges
  • Droppings in the attic (smaller than rat droppings, scattered rather than concentrated)
  • Squirrel activity around the roofline (squirrels can be seen entering and exiting active entry points)

The wiring fire risk

Squirrels gnaw constantly. Their incisor teeth grow continuously throughout their lives, and they manage the growth by grinding the incisors against each other and gnawing on hard objects. In an attic environment, the objects available for gnawing include wooden structural members, plastic sheeting, and electrical wiring.

Squirrel damage to wiring insulation is a genuine fire risk. We find chewed wire in a meaningful percentage of attics with active or recent squirrel activity. The wires may continue to function with damaged insulation, but exposed conductors in contact with wood framing or insulation material represent a latent fire hazard.

If you've had squirrels in your attic, an electrician inspection after removal and exclusion is a reasonable precaution, particularly if the infestation lasted a long time.

Breeding seasons and timing

Gray squirrels in South Carolina have two breeding seasons per year: January through February and June through August. Litter sizes are typically 2 to 5 young. This means an attic infestation can grow significantly within a few months, and young from one season will themselves breed in the following season.

The practical implication: an attic problem discovered in March may involve a nursing female with young that cannot exit on their own. Exclusion devices in this situation would trap the young inside. Proper handling requires confirming the young can exit on their own before completing exclusion, or alternative removal approaches.

Why Mount Pleasant's tree canopy makes exclusion difficult

In many neighborhoods, mature trees directly overhang rooflines. Even after thorough exclusion with all identified entry points sealed, squirrels can find new entry points relatively quickly if they're motivated by territorial behavior near a good roost site.

This is why Monster Wildlife's 3-year warranty matters for squirrel jobs in particular. Squirrel pressure is ongoing in heavily treed neighborhoods. If a sealed entry point fails during the warranty period, we re-seal it at no charge. There is a broader case for why professional rodent exclusion is worth the investment, especially compared to repeated trapping that doesn't address the entry points.

Lasting solutions for properties with heavy tree overhang include canopy trimming (keeping branches at least 8 feet from the roofline), which reduces the squirrel highway access considerably.

What professional squirrel removal involves

A Monster Wildlife squirrel job in Mount Pleasant follows a consistent process:

  • Full exterior inspection to identify all entry points and assess activity level
  • Determination of whether young are present (affects timing of exclusion)
  • Installation of exclusion devices at primary entry points
  • Sealing of all secondary entry points with appropriate materials
  • Return inspection after 10-14 days to confirm all animals have exited
  • Final seal of primary entry points
  • Written 3-year warranty on exclusion work

The inspection takes about 90 minutes. Exclusion installation is typically a half to full day depending on the number of entry points.
