Professional Bird Removal & Exclusion in Charleston, SC

A bird nest in your dryer vent is a fire waiting to happen. Starlings in your eaves produce droppings that corrode paint and spread histoplasmosis. Monster Wildlife clears the nests, cleans the vents, and installs screening that keeps birds out permanently, all while staying fully compliant with federal migratory bird law.

The fire risk you may not know about

Bird nests in dryer vents are one of the leading causes of residential dryer fires. The nest material (dry grass, feathers, and lint) is extremely flammable. Restricted airflow also causes dryers to overheat, which accelerates wear on the appliance and creates additional fire risk.

If your dryer takes longer than usual to dry a load, or if you notice a burning smell when running the dryer, check the exterior vent hood for nest obstruction immediately.

Problem birds in Charleston

The species we most commonly deal with

European Starling
Not MBTA protected
An invasive species from Europe, starlings nest aggressively in eaves, wall voids, and vents. They're cavity nesters and will stuff nest material into any opening they can reach. Large flocks produce significant droppings accumulation.
House Sparrow
Not MBTA protected
The most common bird problem in residential neighborhoods. House sparrows nest in dryer vents, HVAC returns, and weep holes in brick. A single pair becomes multiple generations if not addressed.
Rock Pigeon
Not MBTA protected
Pigeons on rooftops, ledges, and AC units produce highly acidic droppings that corrode metal, stain surfaces, and carry histoplasmosis. Common on commercial buildings and older residential properties.
Chimney Swift
Federally protected (MBTA)
Chimney swifts nest in masonry chimneys from late April through September. Their nests cannot be disturbed during this period. After September, we can install a chimney cap to prevent future nesting. Swifts are beneficial insect predators and their presence is not harmful.
Health & property risks

Beyond the noise: what bird infestations actually cost you

🔥
Dryer vent fire risk
Nest blockage in dryer vents causes overheating and is a leading cause of residential dryer fires. If your dryer takes longer to dry, this may be why.
🫁
Histoplasmosis risk
Bird droppings, especially pigeon droppings, can harbor Histoplasma capsulatum. Disturbing dried droppings without respiratory protection creates inhalation risk.
🧪
Corrosive droppings
Bird feces is highly acidic. On painted surfaces, metal trim, and HVAC components, it causes accelerating corrosion that is expensive to remediate.
🛝
Slip and fall liability
For commercial properties, accumulated bird droppings on walkways and entryways create significant liability exposure.
Common questions

Bird removal questions, answered.

Many migratory bird species are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), which prohibits disturbing active nests, eggs, or birds of protected species without a federal permit. European starlings, house sparrows, and rock pigeons are not protected under the MBTA. Chimney swifts are federally protected and cannot be disturbed while nesting. Monster Wildlife complies with all applicable federal and state regulations.
Nest material (dry grass, straw, and feathers) is highly flammable. Bird nests in dryer vents, HVAC vents, and bathroom exhaust vents are a leading cause of dryer fires. Beyond fire risk, nest material blocks airflow, causing dryer inefficiency, moisture buildup, and in HVAC systems, restricted fresh air circulation and potential carbon monoxide backup.
European starlings and house sparrows are the most frequent problem species. Both are invasive, prolific, and not protected by the MBTA. Rock pigeons are common on commercial buildings, parking structures, and ledges. Chimney swifts nest inside masonry chimneys and are protected; their nests cannot be removed while active from late April through September.
We install heavy gauge hardware cloth screening over all vent openings, dryer vent covers with flapper valves that open one way, chimney caps, and netting that keeps birds out or spikes on ledges as appropriate. The type of deterrent depends on the species and the location, since a single approach for every situation rarely works over the long term.
Yes. We handle residential and commercial bird exclusion and cleanup. Pigeon pressure on commercial buildings, loading docks, rooftops, and parking structures is a separate service that typically involves netting, spikes, and bird wire systems. Contact us for a commercial assessment.
