Squirrels have to chew. Your wiring pays the price.
A squirrel's incisors grow continuously throughout its life, roughly 6 inches per year. To keep them from growing too long, squirrels must chew constantly. When they take up residence in your attic, they chew whatever is available: wooden beams, insulation, and most dangerously, electrical wiring.
Squirrel-chewed wiring is a leading cause of attic fires. Exposed copper conductors can arc against each other or ignite adjacent insulation. Because the damage is hidden inside the attic, it often goes undetected until something short-circuits or a breaker trips. If you have squirrels in your attic, have an electrician inspect the wiring after removal.
Gray squirrels breed twice a year, peaking in January through February and again in July through August. A single female can raise two litters of three to four pups per year. Ignore the problem and you may have twice as many animals by the following season.
Exclusion first. Every time.
The most effective way to remove squirrels from an attic is live exclusion. We install an exclusion door over the primary entry point and seal all secondary entries. Squirrels exit to forage during the day and can't get back in. Within a few days, the attic is empty.
When pups are present and not yet mobile, we use live capture and trapping alongside exclusion so no animals get left behind. Every job is assessed individually.
Squirrel-proofing only works if every entry point is sealed at the same time. Block the main hole and squirrels will find the secondary gap within 24 hours. Our inspections cover every inch of the roofline, and our warranty covers the result.
Squirrel removal in four steps.
What does squirrel removal cost?
Two things drive the price of a squirrel job: how many entry points along the roofline need sealing, and how much chewed insulation and nesting debris has to come out of the attic. A single open gap is cheap to close. A colony that has nested through two breeding seasons and wrecked the insulation is not. Our full Charleston wildlife removal pricing guide breaks down the ranges.
The inspection comes first. You get photos of every entry point and a written quote before any work starts, and the exclusion seal carries our 3-year extendable warranty. Be cautious of any company quoting a flat squirrel price over the phone without seeing your roofline. The number of entries is what sets the job.
Squirrel control in Charleston and Mount Pleasant
The Lowcountry's live oak canopy is a squirrel highway. Branches that overhang the roofline drop gray squirrels straight onto fascia and soffit, and older homes downtown and in Mount Pleasant's Old Village give them gaps to chew open. Newer North Charleston and Summerville builds hide the same access at gable vents and utility runs. We trim the access where we can and seal every opening larger than 1.5 inches so the same squirrels cannot return.
Flying squirrels in the Lowcountry
Southern flying squirrels are common in wooded Charleston neighborhoods and behave nothing like gray squirrels. They are nocturnal, so the noise comes at night, and they nest in colonies, so one entry point can hide a dozen animals. They slip through gaps as small as 1 inch. The fix is the same exclusion and sealing standard set tighter, and we handle flying squirrel removal across the Charleston area.
