Swift, Sanitary Cockroach Removal in Charleston

Charleston's heat, humidity, and older building stock create near-perfect cockroach conditions year-round. Monster Wildlife applies species-specific treatments that address the whole colony, not just the visible roaches, whether you're dealing with palmetto bugs coming in from outside or a German cockroach colony that's taken hold in your kitchen.

Charleston's cockroach problem

Charleston consistently ranks among the most cockroach-affected cities in the US. The combination of subtropical humidity, year-round warmth, and dense older housing stock creates conditions where cockroach populations thrive at every season.

The "palmetto bug" is a cultural fact of life in the Lowcountry. Seeing one indoors consistently, or finding small German cockroaches in your kitchen, means you have an infestation that needs treatment. An occasional palmetto bug coming in from outside is different from an established colony. We'll tell you which one you're dealing with.

Species determine treatment.

The same spray treatment that reduces American cockroaches will do almost nothing for a German cockroach colony. We identify the species and treat accordingly.

American Cockroach

"Palmetto Bug" · 1.5–2 inches
Behavior
Enters from outdoors; prefers drains, crawlspaces, mulch, and exterior plantings. Comes inside in summer heat and after heavy rain.
Our Treatment
Exterior barrier treatment, drain treatment, exclusion of foundation gaps. Interior treatment only when established indoors.

German Cockroach

The hard one · 1/2–5/8 inch
Behavior
Lives and breeds entirely indoors: kitchens, bathrooms, behind appliances, inside cabinet hinges. Breeds rapidly; one female produces hundreds of offspring per year.
Our Treatment
Precision gel bait in harborage locations, insect growth regulator to break breeding cycle, crack and crevice treatment. Requires multiple visits.

Smoky Brown Cockroach

Attic & gutter roach · 1–1.5 inches
Behavior
Prefers high, warm areas: attics, gutters, tree holes, exterior surfaces. Flies readily and is attracted to light. Comes indoors through attic vents and upper-story gaps.
Our Treatment
Attic treatment, gutter cleaning recommendation, exterior barrier. Entry point exclusion at upper-story gaps and vent screens.
Common questions

Cockroach questions, answered.

The American cockroach (locally called the 'palmetto bug') is the large reddish-brown one that flies. It's common throughout Charleston and prefers drains, crawlspaces, and outdoor areas, but comes indoors in hot or rainy weather. German cockroaches are smaller, lighter brown, and breed extremely fast. They're the ones that infest kitchens and bathrooms and are far harder to eliminate. Smoky brown cockroaches are large like Americans but darker, and are common in attics and near outdoor plantings.
Cockroaches contaminate food surfaces with Salmonella, E. coli, and other pathogens from their legs and bodies. Their shed skins and droppings are a leading trigger of asthma and allergic reactions, particularly in children. German cockroach allergens in homes have been directly linked to increased pediatric asthma hospitalization rates in dense urban areas.
Beyond seeing live roaches, signs include: small dark droppings resembling coffee grounds or black pepper near food sources and under appliances; egg cases (oothecae), which are brown ribbed capsules about 1/2" long found in sheltered areas; a musty or oily odor in areas of high activity; and smear marks along baseboards where roaches regularly travel.
DIY sprays kill visible roaches but rarely address harborage areas, egg cases, or the colony as a whole. German cockroaches particularly require gel bait treatments placed precisely in harborage locations, combined with insect growth regulators to break the breeding cycle. Without professional-grade materials and knowledge of species-specific behavior, DIY treatments typically provide temporary reduction followed by rapid rebound.
Prevention involves sealing entry points (gaps around plumbing, doors, and vents), eliminating moisture sources (fixing leaks under sinks, addressing condensation), removing clutter from cabinets, and never leaving food or pet food out overnight. In Charleston's climate, a preventive treatment schedule is the most reliable approach given the persistent environmental pressure from outdoor populations.
